17FILM

Inspiration?

I go through phases. Right now I’m feeding myself with things I hear around me. I love telling stories through film, I don’t know why. When I start to imagine a film, it’s to speak about things that resemble me, when I shoot it gets all mixed up through various pretexts, and when I edit, it’s to find myself at last like at the beginning. What’s very touching with film is that it’s absolutely not progressive in time, it stays at a primitive level because the methods and tools often remain the same. I think that’s why there’s such a bond between people who work on a film together, even after the shoot is over.

17FILM?

It’s an association we’re building with a producer friend which will allow us to focus on imagining and making our films. Plus, if we’re not always in the same city or talking by phone every day, working on films together is a way to stay in contact.

Dream location?

Tough question . . . I dream of characters rather than places. Once I have my character, the location is easier to figure out. I remember something Garrel said: “Ideally, cinema would be made by couples who film just for the love of filming and simply show it to their friends, but that’s very expensive.” I find this formula very funny and very true.

Three films?

Three films everyone should see are “Mes petites amoureuses” by Jean Eustache, “The Trial” by Orson Welles and “L’homme qui ment” (The Man Who Lies) by Alain Robbe-Grillet. Ask me in two minutes and I’ll tell you something completely different. 

The future?

My mother sells clothing, and I’m fascinated by the things she tells people to encourage them to buy. Recently I got to record her with a client, and once they left, the first thing she said was “let me listen to my voice to see if I can make any improvements!” In the future, I wish the same thing as her, to continue searching, sincerely, into the things that resemble me the most.

Une inspiration?

Mon inspiration varie selon les périodes ... en ce moment je me nourris beaucoup de ce que j'entends autour de moi. Simplement j'aime bien raconter des histoires par le cinéma, je sais pas trop pourquoi ...Quand je commence à imaginer un film, c'est pour parler de ce qui me ressemble, quand je tourne c'est pour tout brouiller par des prétextes et quand je monte le film, c'est pour me retrouver enfin comme au moment du scénario. Ce qui est très

touchant avec le cinéma, c'est que ce n'est absolument pas progressif dans le temps, ça reste à un état primitif parce que les démarches et les outils restent souvent les mêmes. D'ailleurs je pense que c'est pour ça qu'il y a toujours beaucoup de tendresses entre les gens qui font un film, même après les tournages.

17FILM?

17FILM c'est une association qu'on est en train de monter avec un ami. Justement parce qu'on aimerait bien s'affranchir de la production pour pouvoir imaginer et faire nos films. Puis comme on sera pas toujours dans la même ville, ou peut-être même à s'appeler tous les jours, faire des films, ce serait aussi un moyen pour garder contact. Mais ça reste très utopique, c'est juste si on se projette comme ça ...

Un espace de rêve?

C'est difficile comme question ... je rêve plus à des personnages qu'à des lieux. A partir du moment où j'ai mon personnage, son espace est plus simple à déterminer. J'avais noté quelque part une phrase de Garrel qui disait que "Le cinéma idéal ce serait des couples qui tournent pour le bonheur de tourner et puis qui montre simplement à l'un, à l'autre ou à un ami ; mais ça coûte très cher." Je trouve la formule très drôle et très juste.

Trois films?

Trois films, ce serait "Mes petites amoureuses" (Mes petites amoureuses) de Jean Eustache, "Le Procès" (The Trial) d'Orson Welles et "L'homme qui ment" (The man who lies) d'Alain Robbe-Grillet. Mais c'est une réponse très immédiate, si tu me reposais la question dans deux minutes je te dirai sûrement autre chose !

L'avenir?

Ma mère vend des vêtements et je suis absolument fasciné par tout ce qu'elle raconte aux gens pour qu'ils achètent. Récemment je l'ai enregistré avec un client et puis lorsque celui-ci est parti, la première chose qu'elle m'a dit c'est voyons fait moi écouter ma voix pour voir si je peux m'améliorer ! Alors je crois que dans l'avenir, j'espère la même chose qu'elle. Je souhaite continuer à chercher sincèrement dans ce qui me ressemble le plus.
